I think the main driving force behind all these is not the desire to be different which is a Western concept. It is the search for excellence on the product design and manufacturing that makes their products competitive on the market. Also, in an oriental country, a person with knowledge is highly respected (like a football hero in the States), which encourages engineers to work for not only the money and self-satisfaction, but also the respect from the society. This is good for the creativity.
