Summary: Looking for a good, used BMW touring bike

Greetings, net.cyclers:

  I'm looking for a used BMW touring bike in very good shape.  I think
the ideal for me would be somewhere in the middle of the following 
ranges:
         1972 - 1980
         R75, 90, 100
         $1500 - $2500

  I'm not very knowledgable about them, and would love your advice.  
I expect to do some touring, some commuting between Berkeley and SF, and
some local (i.e. 5 - 10 mile trip) driving.   I've heard that 90s are
less smooth than 75s and that 100s are rougher still.  Is true?  Are any
years much better/worse than others?  Any general advice on what to look
for and/or look out for?  Resale value is a minor consideration, since I
hope to keep the bike for many years.
