The reason being is they made many changes that were for the better. 1) Longer frame. 2) Front disk brake. 3) Better fork design. Whatever you get I do have a few suggestion other suggestions: Join the BMWMOA (Motorcycle Owners of America) and look into buying parts from places other than a BMW dealership. Parts are extremely expensive at a dealership. Two good places on the east coast (probably not the only places) are "Capital Cycle Corp" and "Bob's Used Parts". The first does their own importing and usually can get the parts to you in a few days. The second is good for parts that normally don't wear out (i.e. a gas tank).
