In response to an earlier comment: DISKED can not write to a disk with the
write tab set to protect (at least, my copy can't).
There is an additional level of software protection that you can flip on
and off with a command, so that you don't write out a sector on an
unprotected disk at the wrong time.  At least on my system, if you try
to write with DISKED when the disk is protected by the tab, it crashes!
