Summary: 

It seems that the optimizing functions of the Microsoft C compiler are
less than 'optimum'.  The thing that I am looking for would take the -S
output (assembly language source) and produce better assembly language
source.

I would prefer a good commercially supported product over freeware
(that's a switch, huh?) but will take what I can get.
