Yes, I've set that up here and made /usr/spool/news a symbolic link to the real location. Another potential pain is when /usr/spool/uucp fills up with compressed/batched files to send out, e.g., if csendbatch is running while you're receiving news. For this reason I've put /usr/spool/uucp on the same filesystem with .../news (and, also, .../oldnews).
