We have a terminal room of TVI910 terminals, which are functionally similiar to the Wyse 50. When using Gosling Emacs, we would have the same problem as mentioned above ("spaces" in mode lines). We solved the problem simply: by deleting Gosling Emacs off of disk, and replacing it with GNU Emacs 17.56. Problem solved. Q.E.D. Definitely a software problem and not a problem with the terminal. By the way, I got a letter from someone who claims that when termcap support was added to Gosling Emacs, they didn't have a brain-damaged terminal available, and since it was just an academic hack and they had no idea anybody would actually try to SELL the thing, they didn't bother putting in support for terminals with "magic cookies" (i.e. terminals that eat a byte of display space for attributes, such as the Wyse 50, Televideo line, Lear-Siegler, etc.).
