At the time that README was written, it was believed by the author to be public domain. It later turned out that both Bell Labs and CCA decided it was worth something, and so claimed proprietary rights. CCA wound up deleting all remaining traces of Warren's EMACS from their version, and sold the result as a product, CCA EMACS. (I believe it's currently available from a spinoff/subsidiary of CCA, CCA Uniworks or some such thing.) Mark
