Ken@Hamlet pointed out a bug in the last piece of code I sent out (thanks and a hat tip) - I don't hold onto the I/O database mutex long enough. Routine FIND_UCB locks and unlocks the I/O database mutex, but I need to keep the lock until I'm done digging throught the CSB.
