There's two ways of using the stuff provided with smail: 1) Hand build a simple database in pathalias format that simply reflects all your direct connections, and have sendmail forward everything it can't handle to a nice nearby neighbor- inother words, handle everything the same way you do ARPA mail now (I have all my `slave' systems route to my domain server, and he figures out the best-way); 2) have one of your pathalias-based nieghbors send you the gateways for all the top-level domains. Anything you can't handle can then be routed to the "volunteer" gateway for handling. Pathalias makes things nice, but Everybody doesn't have to run it. Many of the sites connected to us simply send mail to "adelie!!user" and let my mailer figure it out from there. I'm sure most other sites will be able to find a fiendly neighbor within a hop or two.
