I personally agree with John, that both options should be retained -- regardless of the hardware. In fact, we at Geac are designing a user interface that will have that very property. We are trying to arrange it so that it is not necessary to choose a priori which mode a user is operating in, but allow the user to switch between input modes depending on how easy each request is to express in each of the modes.
