Summary: I had the same problem, but I solved it

I also had problems at first with getting PCLISP to my pc-at. But when
I  very carefully put all of  the files together on  the UNIX system(I
used gnu emacs and just moved buffers around), I  got a good .arc file
that I  eventually used  the xmodem protocol to  transfer to th pc.  I
now have a very nice working copy of pclisp running on my HP vectra.

The point  being when the  files got   here they were   OKAY.  My main
motivation for uudecoding on the  UNIX machine was  to cut down on the
download time.  It may be that you  folks are not  getting  your modem
drivers set into 8 bit mode.  I have  always assumed that the programs
that I am using were taking care of me, and it  appears that they are.
I use a program called xm that I got of the net about 6 months ago. It
only does checksum checking. On the pc end  I use procomm  2.3.  It is
capable of using either checksum or CRC and will adopt to what it sees
coming at it.
