Actually the Mac mouse interface is highly modal. The meaning of a mouse click depends entirely on where you are on screen. MS Chart used to (still does? don't know) switch cursors every time the meaning of a mouse-click changed. Run that thing over a chart and the cursor would change 5, 10, 15 times.
