Rio de Janeiro (REUTERS) -- 

   A man lost an arm when he deliberately stuck it into a lion's cage 
"to test the will of God," officials said yesterday.

   Carlos Alberto Oliveira Fontes, 47, was taken to a hospital after
the lion ripped off his arm. The episode occurred at the zoo in
Salvador, capital of the northeastern state of Bahia.

   Fontes' mother told police that she thought he was joking when he
said he would "offer one of his arms to the lion to test the power of
God. If God is so powerful, he will not allow the lion to hurt me."

   When he recovers, Fontes will be sent to a mental hospital, police said.
