Directive 145, plans to supersede DES protocols with a new standard that incorporates specialed key-variable code-generating algorithms to create nearly tamper-proof datacomm ICs. The first commercial development is the Harris HS3447 Cypher 1, a CMOS chip. NSA will no longer approve DES after 1988. The switch to the new Comsec (Communications Security) chips will be gradual.
