I'd say the reorg benefits anyone who feeds news to anyone else. See Rick Adams remarks. What prompted the whole reorganization was obscenely long and inconsistent sys files. One site carried this, another that, another something else to save costs. In our case as a "rib" node with two backbone full feeds and 16 downstream loads, I maintain a *150 LINE* sys file just to keep everyone happy. Under the new scheme, clasification of groups is well defined. No longer will SysAdmins have to scramble to edit their sys files when groups are created or deleted. No one has to guess which groups will go first when costs need to be cut. Instead of, "We don't carry groups W, X, Y, Z...." ad nauseum it will be "we don't carry talk," or "we don't carry soc." >originally, one of the reasons proffered was that >the reorg was to allow the backbone to nuke the "talk" groups easily (and >without having to consult anyone else). Not by any backbone SAs that I know. Yes, I did just say that the reorg would make it easier to nuke the talk groups. But it's not the backbone that wants to nuke groups. More than half the backbone (and all 14 backbone and "rib" sites in Northern California) have agreed to continue to carry all groups. Talk to anyone who feeds a lot of other sites, and you'll find that the ones that most want their volume trimmed are the leaves. We've already been doing that -- with 150 line sys files. Every one of our connections has agreed to accept a combination of the top level distributions. When the reorg is complete, just like magic the sys file will collapse into all of 25 lines or so. That's a change we'll continue to benefit from for years.
