In the New Yorker for Sept. 22, 1986, the lead note in "The Talk of
the Town" was a letter from a friend describing his recent vacation.

It would not suprise me in the least to discover that the anonymous
friend was a tall shy person who frequently tells stories about
a mythical (but nonetheless real) town in Central Minnesota.
