This is because most of them claim that they use PhD psychologists, extensive personality profiles and other similar, impressive-sounding techniques to match you up with other members. It turns out that, even with all that firepower, they usually do a LOUSY job of matching you up. In fact, you may even get matched with a person with traits you explicitly said you despised (e. g., you hate smoking and they match you up with a smoker). This holds true independent of the cost of the service (and, if you've ever looked into joining a dating service, you'll find that many of them are VERY expensive). The only types that are of ANY merit are the video-dating services (or anything where YOU choose who you want to be matched up with). These tend to take longer (as the other person must decide if he/she wants to meet you too) and you may be required to make an appointment to view any videotapes. They are usually fairly expensive and, since they usually have just one location, may be inconvenient to reach.
