Killing >the tree is simply wanton destruction. Fig trees have deep roots and are extremely hardy compared with the more common apple, peach, etc., which are more common hereabouts. Consequently, they usually don't have "barren" years. If this tree wasn't fruiting there probably was something seriously and fatally wrong. Pruning diseased trees can be a good thing, even if you do it with a damn!
