The only thing that needs to be done is insert the lines (*$P500 *) (*$G500 *) at the start of your Turbo program and Turbo Pascal will allocate 500 byte put and get buffers and use the DOS device drivers. I just tried it, and it works fine. There is nothing special about 500; the size can be anything you want. To John: Thanks! To everyone else: DON'T bother sending me any more hints.
