I have a 200-page document currently in Volkswriter format, and I am
thinking about converting it to Microsoft Word, mostly so I can take
advantage of the Apple LaserWriter and Word's footnoting capabilities.
Word doesn't provide a conversion utility from Volkswriter -> Word.
Because Volkswriter format is largely ASCII, I can read the file into
Word, and all the control characters used by Volkswriter for bold face, 
italics, underlining, etc. are visible in Word.  

I *could* make the document Word format by searching for all the 
occurrences of the "start bold" control character, deleting the 
character, and typing ALT-b -- but this would be a slow and laborious 
process.  Since ALT-b and the other ALT characters used to control print 
style don't actually generate a character in the text, I can't do a 
global REPLACE to change the Volkswriter "start bold" character to ALT-b, 
and there seems to be no macro facility built into Word.  Does anyone 
have any better suggestions?

Please e-mail your ideas as soon as possible.  I have three publishers
asking to see the manuscript, and I would prefer to send them a more
polished piece of work than Volkswriter and my LQ-800 can produce.
