Dr. Quan Zheng of Shanghai University of Science and Technology will speak on ``Theory and Methods for Glo- bal Optimization - An Integral Approach''. TIME: 4:00 PM ROOM: MC 5045 ABSTRACT Until now most of the theory and methods for dealing with minimization problems are gradient-based ones. They are difficult to use to treat the global optimiza- tion problem. In this survey, integral-based theory and methods are reported. The advantages of this approach is that it can be used to treat global optimi- zation problems of nonconvex, nonsmooth and even discontinuous functions.
