Even if it is perfectly safe, a well-meaning, innocent person can misinterpret the instructions, or use very similar materials, or take a shortcut that doesn't work, . . . And in the case of a direct view solar filter, that person could blind themself. A friend once saw me just showing my own homemade (and perfectly safe!) filter to a curious person. My friend pointed out that I really shouldn't have done it. The third person could have seen my filter and tried to make one like it, without realizing that the exact materials I used were vital. I've been pretty careful since then.
