That's standard policy at York and U of T. More interestingly, all of York University, and the law school at U of T, are closed on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur. The feeling is that it doesn't make a lot of sense running classes when a large proportion (1/3?) of students will not be attending. I usually work on December 25.
