I don't know about the U.S., but here, there are usually multiple prefixes available within a particular area. What we asked for, in fact, was to be switched to Touch-Tone dialing, which required an upgrade from the old exchange the line was on, to a more modern one which supports tone dialing and, incidentally, has fewer problems with line noise.
