A friend of mine had the same problem with his machine.  We got another
working machine and started switching parts one by one until the
broken machine worked.  It turned out to be a bad ROM chip.  I'm 
not sure where he eventually got another ROM for the bad machine.

After we put the 'good' mahine back together, it still worked!.
