ARC is well known for being downward compat; that is to say, a newer
version will unarc files created with an older version. It doesn't go
the other way 'round, tho.
 
You might check with Ken Kaplan for more info. He runs the St Louis
DECUS bbs and (I believe) has some connection with the Rainbow group.
