There is nothing special about the 'U', it just seems to be the convention that DEC chose to use. You don't have to prepend the 'U' to all of the directory files for each machine that you connect. You should modify the passwd file so that the UID for each uucp machine login is unique and different from the 'uucp' login. If you don't, uucico will fail.
