SET HOST/DTE won't work with /notypeahead set. The best thing I've found to do in this case is to leave the permanent characteristic set to /notypeahead, then allocate the device when you want to use it, and then set it to /typeahead (without using /perm). Then, when you deallocate the device, it will fall back to /notypeahead.
