I've had a similar problem with my 27" sony.  I found that the problem was not
from the TV, but from some magnetic interference in the room.  I didn't find
the source of the interference, but I found that I could make the smudge go 
away by moving it to another location.  In my case, moving it over 1 foot made
the difference.  (maybe you have a speaker nearby)
