Currently, I run VMS4.4 (yuchh!) and the Oracle DBMS. Due to software changes on other computers that are connected to the VAX, I need to change the VAX software. My requirements: TCP/IP networking support a database I want to get to Unix. To get the tcp/ip, I need to stay with 4.3BSD. Unfortunately, Oracle will not run under the BSD unix variants. Therefore, I'm looking for another DBMS that will be compatible with our present work. What I want: Relational data model. SQL query language. a programmatic interface, to allow an arbitrary SQL query to be processed under program control. a half-way usable terminal interface. Nothing real fancy, but it has to be usable by human beings without programming. If it has a good way to import Oracle tables, so much the better. Also, cost is a factor. Please let me know what's out there, and your experiences with it. The winning nominee, and the runners-up, will be summarized if anyone is interested. Don't forget, send before midnight tonight. Requirements subject to change without notice. Decision of the judges is final, maybe. :-) Thanks for the help, -- David S.
