I also recognize that you seem to feel _very_ strongly on the subject. Could I prevail upon you to be more judicious in your choice of words in the future? 2) I do not know what the dropout rate for SS is (i.e how often does it occur that a potential beneficiary never receives benefits). I do know that those who do live to collect, receive more benefits (even when calculated in constant-dollar figures) than they paid in to SS. If the "definition" of welfare is to receive funds in ways other than conventional earning, then SS is indeed often (but not always) welfare.
