I think I must throw in my 2 Pfennig's worth...
we decided to do uucp autorouting a long time ago, when most unknowledgeable
mail users thought that ...!unido!mcvax!decvax!... was the only way across
the pond.  mcvax!decvax has been an awfully slow, awfully unreliable and
awfully expensive 300bd telephone link, and we have a fast, reliable and cheap
x.25 link to seismo...  Not doing autorouting would have meant mail delivery
times in the order of several days AND high comm. cost, while with seismo
we have delivery within a few hours.  Compared to the real benefits that
autorouting has, the disadvantages are nearly nil.  Who wants to talk to a
uucp site which can't choose a unique name, anyway :-) ?
