Kermit itself can be built with different drivers during the dehexification stage - you might have only gotten a version with the SSC driver. As far as I know, there are also drivers for the Micro Tek, Apple Comm card, and Hayes serial interfaces. These drivers used to be ftp'able from nosc-shark.arpa - you'd have to check to see if it is still there - or you can contact medin@nosc -Ike.
