A better solution, in use here at elsie for three years now: go ahead and leave auto-wrap enabled (as most people do), but *don't* set "co#79". Instead, set "ti=\E[?7l:te=\E[?7h". Doing this arranges things so that programs that do cursor motion turn off auto wrap when they start up and turn auto wrap back on when they finish.
