  interesting.  just for fun this morning i added the 'm' keys to my
  mouse/button keymaps.  it worked.  unfortunately two constants have
  changed since the last time i tried it (and failed).

  i went from os 2.2 to 3.2 (still 2/50 hardware).  i also added the
  V10R4 updates to X.

ps to dave lemke:
  try the meta keys on your sun with your updated x and see if that is
  what fixed it.
