There are problems having to do with memory allocation and garbage collection (I think). There is a version that works available for FTP from harvard. It is based on 17.61, but has several known bugs. Many feel that these bugs make it unusable, but I use it all of the time. The currently working version is in ~ftp/vms/gnuemacs and is available via anonymous FTP.
