It is a program that will interface with VAX/VMS MAIL using the foreign protocol mechanism to route messages to other networks like ARPAnet UUCP or anything else that is known to BITNIC. It will on the other side interface with JNET from Joiner Associates. If you already have Jnet this is a very good add-on that will ease your use of other nets. How does it work ? You simply type $ mail my_textfile To: bitnet%"info-vax@sri-kl.arpa" Your mail will then be sent to the next GATEWAY, most probably WISCVM, after the correct header has been added by NET-MAILER. NET-MAILER knowa how to resolve compex addresses, thus if you receive a mail from somewhere else and you have a from line in your mail that looks like this: From: edu%"zrgc001%dtuzdv5a.bitnet@wiscvm.wisc.edu" then you may simply type MAIL> REPLY and may reply as you were when using VMSmail locally. NET-MAILER is a executable shareable image that is much faster than the often used GMAIL by Ed Miller. What comes with it ? Everything may be customized on a per user or per system basis using logical names. Thus you may change NET-MAILER's interpretation of addresses. You may also select a SIGNATURE file that is being added to every mail. And it provides you with a NAMES file that will fill in the true name of the recipient. You may also select an additional copy for yourself. A detailed description for users is available as a TeX file. What does it require ? This depends on the version you are interested in. The standard version with 2000 simultaneous recipients of the same mail requires 400 blocks of disk. Jnet Version 2 with BITLIB.OLB and VMS 4.2+ is also required. Where does it come from ? NET-MAILER was written by students of the University of Tuebingen, primarily to faciliate answers to questions raised on mailing lists like info-vax. It was tested and improved there for a long time. What does it cost ? To finance improvements and similar developments, we have to charge a fee of US$ 99 for a network distribution, if a cheque ackompagnies your order. The network distribution is under 800 records in size. If payment is made by eurocheque, the price is only DM 99. Whom do I have to contact for details ? The address is Christoph D.
