Message-ID: <983@ulowell.cs.ulowell.edu> Date: Tue, 27-Jan-87 09:50:59 EST Article-I.D.: ulowell.983 Posted: Tue Jan 27 09:50:59 1987 Date-Received: Thu, 29-Jan-87 03:46:05 EST Sender: daemon@ucbvax.BERKELEY.EDU Organization: University of Lowell Lines: 21 Approved: works@red.rutgers.edu We are about to get a SunServer 3/280 workstaion to serve as the central unix machine for our research lab. It will have a dozen or so serial terminals tied into it along with 4-5 IBM-PC and Amiga Workstations using ethernet and NFS software. An average number of users at prime time would be about eight, they would be performing a mix of tasks ranging from software development to text processing and news reading. Has anyone had experience using a SunServer? Do they perform this function well? Can they handle the load? The system we are looking at as eight-MEG of memory and a 500 meg drive. The one other system wee are looking into is a Celerity 1200. Please do not both to suggest other machines, we have looked at many and already have several Apollos, VAX's and Micro-Vaxs in the lab. Why aren't Amiga9000's selling?" Bowman hesitates, "You aren't IBM compatible."
