Be warned that tests have demonstrated that strongly motivated people can't reliably be stopped even by the military tear agent ("CS") (technically it's not a gas), although it certainly would discourage anyone who wasn't pretty damn determined... I trust your wife knows that even a fairly good tear agent isn't going to be a magic wand, any more than a handgun would be.
