This idea has considerable merit. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario has had a similar plan for some time now for PhD students in accounting. They lend you X$ a year and forgive Y$ a year for each year you teach. A good deal if you wanted to teach anyway, and even if you didn't. (We need more accounting profs.)
