This is just plain wrong.  I have considerable experience with the Hayes
Smartmodem 300, Smartmodem 1200, and Smartmodem 2400; all of these
return to command mode when the escape sequence is issued.

You must have spent too much time playing with brain-damaged Hayes
clones like the USR Password, which do behave as you describe.
