We are planning to buy a general purpose printer to serve the needs of a fairly busy office (both secretarial and technical users). We are looking for something virtually letter-quality, high speed & quiet (isn't everyone) in the $1500-2000 range. Some degree of compatibilty with our existing word-processing printers (IBM Quietwriters and an Epson FX286) and IBM-standard (if there's such a thing) graphics are desirable. We will want to use it with a sheet feeder (perhaps a double bin). My feeling has been that a high-quality 24-pin dot matrix printer would best fit this bill. So far my research confirms that this is the only way you get NLQ with speeds > 100cps. However I haven't any first hand experience. I'm weighing several printers: the Epson LQ series, the NEC P5-9, the Toshiba P341 & P351, the Fujitsu DL2400 (quite interested in this one), the recently introduce ALPS line, and the Brother 2024L (only 80 cps NLQ). I would very much appreciate any advice anyone could give me on any of these models or on the subject of 24-pin printers or on any alternate solutions for my application. Many thanks, -- John Wright ////////////////// Phone: 902-424-3805 or 902-424-6527 Post: c/o Dr Pat Lane, Biology Dept, Dalhousie U, Halifax N.S., CANADA B3H-4H8 Ean/Bitnet: lane@cs.dal.cdn Arpa: lane%cs.dal.cdb%ubc.csnet@csnet-relay.arpa Uucp:{seismo, watmath, utai, garfield}!dalcs!lane Csnet:lane%cs.dal.cdn@ubc.csnet
