Does anyone have any benchmarks on Minix performance on PC hardware compared to
other Unix systems (i.e Microport, Xenix).

There has been some discussion on the issue of efficiency versus clean code.

I have the Minix book and was impressed with the cleanliness of the code -- it
would be a pleasure to work with.

How bad is performance?  Any idea of the number of system calls/second for 
various calls on identifiable hardware?
