Supposedly, C-A was going to publish a spec for developers saying: "here is the protocol that you should use when developing hot key programs so you don't step all over each other." Like everything else, time and manpower were not on their side. Charlie Heath (of Microsmiths) has a package called FunKeys that does this. It comes with his FastFonts program (along with a screenblanker). I use them all the time - they work great. Nice fast text generation, alternate workbench fonts, hot keys and tiny screenblanker.
