Managed to get it work after someone reminded me that Telenet (not Telnet) is normally in 7-bit mode, so had to put some set commands in before connecting to get it into 8-bit mode. The only other problem then was that AE Pro of course takes the file exactly as is, i.e., in Apple's hi-bit-on form, which the receiving system didn't like. (received OK, just that none of "those" characters were printable -- came out only as their octal equivalents). Found the chforum utility on the AE Pro disk to turn DOS format into CP/M; don't know what CP/M is but that did the trick.
