Hmmmmm.....I tried this under AT&T DOS 3.1 on my PC 6300 and it worked OK.
In fact, I wrote a little batch file "setpath" that looks like this:

set path=%PATH%;%1

so I could add any directory to the current path list. It worked perfectly.
