This 'going against the rules' is useful when you are using some of
the large screen monitors out there. Imagine resizing your windows to fit
the large screens and then not being able to do anything with them on your
small Mac screen unless you have the large screen handy at the same time.
This being due to the fact that the window size info is saved when you save 
the document.
