Too all those who sent helpfull suggestions, in particular the use
of rm -ri .

Yep, the rm -ri . worked great. I felt a bit silly after posting the question.
I was [re]reading the note in mod.announce.newuser that lists the most
asked net questions (and their answers) and this was mentioned there!

I guess its always rereading stuff like that even if you've been on the net
awhile !:=)
