If someone edited the acls for that directory with edacl or acl, then you may have to use those same commands to fix them. The aegis acls have much more functionallity than unix protections so one cannot always control the aegis acls with the unix commands. If you need help figuring out what to do to the acls in order to get the desired effects, let me know and I'll help you out. The second thing I would check is the passwd file. Is there more than one etc directory on the network? 52c4 could have it's own passwd file.
